About two years ago I started the restoration of a garden. It was originally designed and planted in the 1940’s after WWII. It came into our lives in 1987 as a well tended but not an imaginatively managed garden. Over the years we developed different areas and introduced many more plants to create variety.
In the winter of 2010 nearly all the heathers in the heather garden died after six weeks below freezing under a blanket of snow. The following May the Iris bed produced few flowers and the herbaceous areas were in need of digging up and dividing. Something radical was required.
Beginning with Iris bed followed by a redesign of the hard landscaping of the heather garden, to create a new seating area prior to replanting, the task began. Now we are starting year three of this project and a quarter of the garden remains to be tackled.
It has been a steep learning curve and hard work but enormous fun and deeply rewarding and I hope the month by month entries for 2015 may convey some of this joy.
